At the age of 15, he began his medical training at the University of Liverpool Medical School. During his student years, the Liverpudlian received distinctions and awards in physiology, anatomy, medicine, pharmacology, obstetrics, and gynaecology. After graduating with honours, Clifford Brewer started working at the Liverpool Royal Infirmary. He undertook anatomical research, taught surgery, and was appointed as a surgical registrar to Robert Kelly.

Furthermore, he was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons (FRCS). At the age of 25, Brewer completed his training at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford, after which he became known as a surgical resident.

World War II and Mobilisation

When the Second World War broke out, Brewer, a former Territorial Army officer, was mobilised with his unit in the 6th (1st Southern) Oxford Territorial Hospital. The surgeon witnessed events unfold in Egypt, Palestine, Syria, and France. Following the D-Day landings, his workload exploded; he began performing up to 20 operations a day. This relentless pace continued for nine months, during which time he carried out over a thousand surgical procedures.

Remarkably, Brewer’s surgical team was fully self-sufficient, operating out of two lorries and a mobile operating theatre. He also famously operated on General Sikorski, a service that earned him the Order of Polonia Restituta (Order of the Rebirth of Poland).

Life After the War

Once the Second World War ended, Clifford Brewer returned to his hometown and resumed work at the Liverpool Royal Infirmary. Post-war, he became a leading Consultant Surgeon. He was also elected President of the University Club and became a member of the Medical Institution and the Antiquarian Horological Society.

Additionally, he held senior positions at the Liverpool Homeopathic Hospital, St Helens Hospital, the University of Liverpool, and the Liverpool School of Dental Surgery. Brewer was also a keen and long-serving lecturer.

It’s important to note Brewer’s significant contributions to the fields of breast and colorectal surgery. He established the Breast Clinic at the Liverpool Royal Infirmary. Furthermore, Clifford Brewer was the first surgeon to perform an adrenalectomy to treat advanced malignant tumours. He was also made a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons.

On a personal note, the celebrated surgeon was married and had five children.

A Quick Look at D-Day

“D-Day,” also known as Operation Overlord, took place in June 1944. This strategic military operation was the Allied invasion to liberate German-occupied north-western France during World War II. Forces from the United States, Great Britain, and Canada played the principal roles in this massive undertaking.

The air assault involved 12,000 aircraft landing paratroopers in France, which successfully opened the Second Front. The seaborne assault included 160,000 ground troops, 4,000 transport vessels, and naval support from 600 warships. The battle for the Normandy region ultimately lasted for two and a half months.

We hope you found this article informative and thought-provoking.

The Second World War claimed the lives of millions and obliterated cities and villages.
