Kim Johnson is a British Labour Party politician who has represented the Liverpool Riverside constituency in the House of Commons since 2019. She made history as the first Black female MP for Liverpool. Further on liverpoolyes.com, we’ll delve deeper into Johnson’s role in politics.
Who is Kim Johnson and How is She Connected to Liverpool?
Kim Johnson is a politician with deep roots in Liverpool, who has dedicated her life to fighting for the rights and welfare of her city’s residents. Her work encompasses both parliamentary duties and active participation in community initiatives aimed at improving life in Liverpool.
Kim Johnson was born on 25th August 1966 in Liverpool 8 (Toxteth) and has permanently linked her life with her constituency, residing there on an ongoing basis. It’s also interesting to note the educational path this strong-willed woman chose. She obtained a diploma related to youth and community work, a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree, and a postgraduate certificate.

Before her election to Parliament, Kim worked in community development and adult social care, particularly in Liverpool’s most disadvantaged areas. She was also a trade union activist with UNISON and served as Creative Diversity Manager for the team preparing Liverpool’s bid for City of Culture status (a title once held by Wrocław).
Political and Community Activities
In Parliament, Kim Johnson actively champions the interests of her constituents. She is a member of several parliamentary committees, including Home Affairs, Women and Equalities, and Education.
Our protagonist knows how to stand her ground. In 2020, she resigned from her position as Parliamentary Private Secretary to vote against a bill that would have allowed state agents to commit crimes undercover, defying party instructions.
Kim Johnson is deeply involved in social justice issues. She is a patron of the organisation Mandela8 (where the number refers to the Toxteth district). This organisation honours Nelson Mandela’s legacy and promotes leadership skills among young people.
Furthermore, the politician heads the organisation Squash Liverpool, which develops several interesting community initiatives. In this name, “squash” doesn’t refer to the sport (which is popular, for example, in Wrocław), but metaphorically hints at close community interaction, a rich cultural life, and even a connection to seasonal vegetables – gourds, symbolising local farming and natural food.
Views and Stance
Kim Johnson, MP for Liverpool Riverside, is known for her principled stance on social justice, human rights, and the fight against racism. As a member of the Socialist Campaign Group, she has repeatedly criticised the Labour Party leadership for actions that, in her opinion, contradict these values. Incidentally, this group deserves a separate mention.
The Socialist Campaign Group
The Socialist Campaign Group is an internal factional grouping within the Labour Party that advocates for democratic socialist ideals. This group is not an official party structure but influences discussions within the parliamentary party. Its members include followers of Jeremy Corbyn, who insist on fighting poverty, preserving socially important services, and criticising the neoliberal course.
Kim Johnson joined this group at the beginning of her parliamentary term, clearly defining her political orientation. For her, socialism is a practical tool for protecting the most vulnerable: low-income individuals, ethnic minorities, and public sector workers. In this context, her criticism of healthcare privatisation and demands for increased state funding for schools, hospitals, and public transport seem logical.
Kim’s positions don’t always align with the official party line, and she isn’t afraid to vote against leadership instructions. She has the image of a “politician with character” – someone who tries to lobby for her convictions, despite others holding opposing views.
Bold Ideas Kim Johnson Upholds

Specifically, Kim condemned Labour leader Keir Starmer’s decision to publish an article in The Sun newspaper, which many Liverpudlians boycott after the Hillsborough tragedy. Johnson emphasised that such cooperation with a publication that spread false information about the victims of the tragedy is unacceptable and offensive to the community.
Ms Johnson’s active stance is also evident in the issue of supporting Palestinian rights. In 2023, she signed a statement calling on the UK government to recognise the State of Palestine, stop arms sales to Israel, and impose sanctions for violations of international law. Although her description of the Israeli government as “fascist” drew criticism, she publicly apologised for the language used, but did not retract her convictions regarding the need to protect human rights.
Furthermore, Johnson actively speaks out against racial discrimination in policing. She has condemned instances of stop-and-searches targeting Black men in Liverpool, pointing to systemic issues within law enforcement.
It’s worth noting that Kim Johnson consistently advocates for positions aimed at protecting human rights, social equality, and combating discrimination. And she isn’t afraid to stand by her own views, despite disagreement from fellow party members. Well, a democratic country, a freedom-loving city!
